It astonishes me how right wing the world is going. I remember the 80's where right wing politics had encouraged the me,me,me culture, redundancies and high interest rates and cuts in services and privatization. There was blatant racism, homophobia and antisemitism, even main stream.
It wasn't fun my friends and I where just starting out in our careers, paid pittance with redundancies hanging over our heads and an upsurge in drug taking, cocaine ,speed, to keep you going, cannabis to slow you down and E's, trips and mushrooms for extra fun.
There where a lot of east\west concerns and one upmanship going on,we had numerous NATO forces bases in West Germany but things felt safe as there appeared to be a mutual understanding. We had wars, most of them similar to the ones today, Iran,,Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen.......you get the picture .
When things moved slightly to the left, things seemed to become a little better for everyone , until the left wing started to exert more influence. This upset the balance and gave a voice to the right and right wing.
I don't want to us to return to an 80's mentality , it was and is unhealthy for everyone, going slightly left makes sense, lets think of others, fairness for all. It doesn't make you a socialist it makes you a compassionate and kind individual.
